Spurn is a truly unique place: a long stretch of sand extending three and half miles into the Humber Estuary. Managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, a rich maritime and military history has given way over the last 50 years to what has now become a renowned and internationally important wildlife haven. One of the UK’s top migration watch points, spring and autumn proves to be an irresistible draw for birdwatchers, with bracing walks and panoramic sea views guaranteed all year round. Winter sees wading birds like knot, dunlin and godwit gather in huge swirling flocks, with plenty of resident and migratory seabirds always offshore.

Spurn is a site for all seasons, with no two days the same. Visitors (sorry, no dogs) may wander freely over much of the nature reserve, with the help of information boards on the paths. The newly renovated Spurn Lighthouse offers unparalleled panoramic views from the 128ft-high lantern room, with access from Kilnsea on foot or onboard a 4×4 ‘Spurn Safari’. Please note there is no vehicle access right down to the end of the peninsula, known locally as the Point: access is by foot or bicycle. High tide does see the Point cut off from the mainland, so do check tide times carefully before planning a visit.

If you don’t fancy the idea of roaming the dunes on foot or bicycle, or you’re looking for a day out with a difference, then check out the fantastic Spurn Safaris. Climb aboard a giant 4×4 and cross the sand with ease on a guided two hour tour down the Point – now including visits to the restored lighthouse. You’ll get fantastic views of the wildlife and vistas, as well as the chance to stretch your legs on a guided walk at the Point.

Admission to the nature reserve is free (donations welcome); there is an entry fee for the lighthouse and for Spurn Safaris.
