The Roost Retreat

The Roost Retreat in North Yorkshire is a comfortable, quiet and rustic holiday home ideal for Autumn Breaks in North Yorkshire located in Leeming Bar, on the Gateway to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Our characteristic little holiday hideaway is an eco-conversion of a former Orangery and has been beautifully restored, retaining the original beams into cosy and unique self-catering accommodation. The Roost Retreat also benefits from its own separate kitchenette and a private outside patio area with a barbeque and fire pit. There is ample off-road private, level and secure parking, right outside the accommodation, a large enclosed front garden and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Sleeping up to two guests, we are the perfect holiday bolthole for couples in North Yorkshire, solo travellers, business guests and visitors/contractors to nearby RAF Leeming.  Dog friendly (up to two small dogs), motorcyclists, cyclists and walkers are also welcome. We are less than a minute walk for the Wensleydale Railway and the Wensleydale Polar Express and therefore ideal for event crew staff looking for conveniently placed accommodation whilst working at the event.

Local History

Many people ask us what the meaning of the word ‘Bar in the village’s name refers to. Back in the days when the Great North Road was a toll road, travellers using it were required to pay at the `bar’ or gate (toll) in order to continue their journey.  The original Toll house from the days of the original A1 remains in situ, opposite Leeming Bar railway station and is now a private house.

An old cast iron milepost can been seen opposite The Roost, on the old Great North Road, marking the distance for two main ports of call on this route. This milepost was one of many made at the Mattison Iron Foundry and can still be seen around parts of North Yorkshire and many have been beautifully restored. The Mattison Family owned and lived in both Victorian villas, Elm Tree Farm (adjacent to The Roost) and The Poplars next door. The former foundry has been sympathetically refurbished in recent years and the characteristic architectural features can still be seen.  It now houses some small local businesses including Bathrooms Direct and John H. Gills (who took over the foundry from the Mattison family in the 1920’s).
