The Roost Retreat is a comfortable, quiet and rustic holiday home located in Leeming Bar, on the Gateway to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Our characteristic little holiday hideaway is an eco-conversion of a former Orangery and has been beautifully restored, retaining the original beams into cosy and unique self-catering accommodation. The Roost Retreat also benefits from its own separate kitchenette and a private outside patio area with a barbeque and fire pit. There is ample off-road private, level and secure parking, right outside the accommodation, a large enclosed front garden and complimentary Wi-Fi.
Sleeping up to two guests, we are the perfect holiday bolthole for couples, solo travellers, business guests and visitors/contractors to nearby RAF Leeming. Dog friendly (up to two small dogs), motorcyclists, cyclists and walkers are also welcome. We are less than a minute walk for the Wensleydale Railway and the Wensleydale Polar Express and therefore ideal for event crew staff looking for conveniently placed accommodation whilst working at the event.
Many people ask us what the meaning of the word ‘Bar‘ in the village’s name refers to. Back in the days when the Great North Road was a toll road, travellers using it were required to pay at the `bar’ or gate (toll) in order to continue their journey. The original Toll house from the days of the original A1 remains in situ, opposite Leeming Bar railway station and is now a private house.
An old cast iron milepost can been seen opposite The Roost, on the old Great North Road, marking the distance for two main ports of call on this route. This milepost was one of many made at the Mattison Iron Foundry and can still be seen around parts of North Yorkshire and many have been beautifully restored. The Mattison Family owned and lived in both Victorian villas, Elm Tree Farm (adjacent to The Roost) and The Poplars next door. The former foundry has been sympathetically refurbished in recent years and the characteristic architectural features can still be seen. It now houses some small local businesses including Bathrooms Direct and John H. Gills (who took over the foundry from the Mattison family in the 1920’s).

Our comfortable, cosy and quiet holiday retreat is set back off the main road and made up of two separate and comfortable areas. The primary room at The Roost Retreat, being the former Orangery, retains the original characteristic wooden beams and is dotted with a Poultry theme throughout as a nod towards the buildings’ previous role as a working farm.
Going through the French style doors, into the living/bedroom you are met with a luxurious king-size four poster bed with a seating area and two comfy chairs. There is a full hospitality tray with a range of Ringtons teas, coffee, hot chocolate, marshmallows and our own homemade cake waiting for you on arrival. A Welcome basket is provided for guests staying three or more nights. There is full Wi-Fi coverage in The Roost and is equipped with a 32″ Smart TV with Freeview and streaming channels (Netflix, Prime and BBC iPlayer)
The Roost Retreat is fully double glazed throughout and has blackout curtains in the living area. There are lovely views across to our well-stocked front garden and the park beyond with its mature trees. Guests have access to their own exclusive patio area with seating, a barbeque and fire pit for when the sun goes down.
The separate kitchenette is a separate outside room, a step away from The Roost, which doubles up as a dining area. It is well-equipped with a table and chairs, electric wall heater, air fryer, portable hot plate, mini-fridge and a range of cooking utensils. There is a curtain you can draw across and cosy up in the evenings with a meal and glass of wine, creating a quiet, relaxing and romantic atmosphere.
The Roost Retreat has level, secure on-site parking on a tarmac surface with a turning space. The accommodation is all ground floor level, with double door access, with no stairs anywhere in the property and is suitable for those with walking/mobility difficulties. There is a separate side gate for guest use, located near the patio area.
