I’m Paul and welcome to EASTWATCH guesthouse.
I’m a Londoner and having lived in the London hustle and bustle all my life, managing homes for adults with learning disabilities, and then running my own successful dog walking business, it was time for a change. Myself, Luna, Ned and Skye (my three friendly dogs) and my partner could not be happier here in the beautiful Berwick-upon-Tweed area. After several holidays staying with local friends and family, I completely fell in love with the local way and pace of life, took the plunge and oversaw a renovation project for Eastwatch guesthouse. I welcomed my first guests in May 2018 and haven’t looked back since!
The bedrooms – equipped with everything you need for a comfortable, relaxing stay – are all decorated in a modern, airy style, with a few design twists and all boast sea views. There is a fully equipped kitchen, shared with other guests, where you are welcome to make your own food, chill your own wine, socialise, kick back and relax. For the more energetic, there is a 10-metre indoor swimming pool and fitness equipment. Afterwards, you can relax in the sauna or, between March 1 and October 31, the large, outdoor, solar-powered hot tub. The sun may always shine on TV but north Northumberland can be less fortunate…
EASTWATCH is located slap bang on Spittal’s large sandy beach, a few minutes drive from the A1. The stunning views from throughout the house, include Berwick-upon-Tweed, Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and, in the evening, the hypnotic light from the lighthouse on The Farne Islands. EASTWATCH guesthouse is ideally situated for all local and surrounding activities, up and down the east coast and inland. If you enjoy walking, the Northumberland Coast Path is directly outside the property and links directly to the Berwickshire Coastal Path, St Cuthbert’s Way, St Oswald’s Way and paths beyond. For cyclists, NR 1, NR 76, The Pennine Cycleway and The Sandstone Way are very close by and we have plenty of on-site bike storage available.
Berwick town centre is an easy and pleasant 25 minute walk away, or there are plenty of local buses and taxis. If you fancy travelling further afield, Berwick-upon-Tweed rail station is less than 10 mins by car and has a regular services north and south via Edinburgh and Newcastle, both 45 minutes by rail and London is only 3 hours 40 minutes.
If coming by car there is plenty of parking directly outside and you will be provided with a free returnable permit on arrival for the duration of your stay.
I look forward to warmly welcoming you here. Don’t forget to pack your swimmies!

There is loads to do in Berwick-upon -Tweed, and EASTWATCH guesthouse is an ideal base for activities and attractions in north Northumberland, The Scottish Borders and East Lothian. Opportunities for walking, cycling, golf, wildlife, history, local independent shopping, and sampling local food and drinks are easy to come by. The cities of Edinburgh and Newcastle are both an hour away by road, or are easy reachable by train via the east coast mainline from Berwick Station, and each has its own unique characters and shopping opportunities.
EASTWATCH guesthouse is a great base for walkers and is located right on the Northumberland Coast Path, and only a mile or so from the southern end of the Berwickshire Coastal Path. These long distance paths link directly to the John Muir Way, the St Cuthbert’s and St Oswald’s Ways and other paths beyond making us an ideal start, stop off, or finishing point. Hint: The hot tub is very welcome after a long day’s walking, so it’s worth adding an extra leg to/from Lindisfarne on the St Cuthbert’s Way.
There also great local footpaths around Berwick itself including, of course, the classic route around the town’s famous Elizabethan ramparts and quayside. Other town trails include The Lowry Trail and The Tweed and Coast Nature Trail. More info can be found here.
We have plenty of secure bike storage in our garage here at EASTWATCH, and so make a great base for cyclists looking to tour the surrounding area. We are also ideal for those on longer cycling tours looking to stop off and rest the legs in the hot tub. There are 3 National Cycle routes within easy reach: NR1, NR68 and NR76, as well as quiet country lanes and local landmarks to tour at a more leisurely pace. Additional cycling info can be found here.
Where to start… right outside our door maybe? Dolphins and seals are a regular visitor to the waters off Spittal Beach and you might be lucky enough to see them especially in the sunnier months. Track local sightings here. Terns and Gannetts diving into the sea off the beach are a favourite of ours. You might also be very lucky and see otters – keep your eyes peeled.
Further afield there are two big hitters for seabird fans: The Farne Islands, and The Bass Rock. These should be right up there at the top of your To Do List if birds, swell, and (we have to admit) the waft of guano on a summer breeze is your thing.
EASTWATCH has easy access to the A1 and onwards to the links course at Goswick as well as the cliff top course at Magdalene Fields in Berwick itself. We are an hour away by car from Muirfield and make a great stopping off point to or from a golfing tour of Scotland.
Being right on the beach, watersports are an obvious highlight of your stay here. Surfing, sailing, kayaking, jet-skiing, water-skiing, paddle boarding, as well as kite-surfing and kite-buggying, are seen more and more frequently at Spittal. Come and dip your toes in.
For fans of drier activities there are loads of options, and some can be found here.
EASTWATCH guesthouse is right on the seafront in Spittal, Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Berwick is England’s most northerly town sitting midway between Edinburgh and Newcastle and their airports. Right on the A1 and served by trains via the East Coast Mainline, Berwick is exceptionally easy to reach and an ideal base from which to explore Northumberland, The Scottish Borders and East Lothian.
It’s also an ideal stop off on a longer journey north or south.
