Sheffield Arms Hotel Bed And Breakfast Sheffield Arms Hotel Bed And Breakfast Property Description

The Sheffield Arms Bed And Breakfast is a charming old country pub in the heart of picturesque Burton upon Stather, North Lincolnshire.. The Sheffield Arms takes its name from the prominent local family. The current Baronet is Sir Reginald Sheffield. During the time of his grandfather and great grandfather the Pub had fallen into disrepair and the Sheffield family bought and rebuilt it in 1903. It was known as the Black Bull from 1687, but took the name The Sheffield Arms in 1905 in recognition of the noble family. The Sheff' has since been owned by Darleys, a local brewer from Thorne near Doncaster, Wards of Sheffield and latterly Vaux Breweries. It is now owned by Pubmaster Limited.

Sheffield Arms Hotel Bed And Breakfast Sheffield Arms Hotel Bed And Breakfast Local Information

Burton is on the river Trent, not to be confused with the much larger Burton in Staffordshire which is also on the same river. The Stather part of the village name is a corruption of staithes, which were used on a landing stage for a ferry. The ferry ceased to operate at the end of the 19th century when the bridge was opened over the river at Keadby and Gunness. The Sheff' is at the top of a hill beside the river and has commanding views over the Trent plain and the Isle of Axholme.

Burton is in the most attractive part of North Lincolnshire close to Normanby Hall, a large country park with many attractions including the Hall itself (Regency) a Victorian garden, farming museum, deer park, golf course and many attractive walks. There are many other attractive walks by the River Trent and along the escarpment to the turf maze at Alkborough, thought to be over 1000 years old. Alkborough was also the scene of a "skirmish" during the civil war involving over 1,000 men. The church and the grave stones still carry the scars. A little further on you can see Trent Falls (the confluence of the Trent and Ouse to form the Humber) beyond.
