Four Oaks Bed and Breakfast Property Description
Four Oaks Bed and Breakfast offers accommodation in a comfortable, peaceful family home, with open views of lovely rolling countryside and farmland. Near the village of Canonbie, off the A7 just North of Carlisle, providing an excellent base for touring the Borderlands. Near River Esk.
Four Oaks Bed and Breakfast Local Information
Canonbie is situated in the area originally known as the “Debateable Landâ€; a considerable expanse of land neither under the jurisdiction of the Scots nor the English, thus becoming a refuge for all the outlaws and undesirables in the region.
Liddesdale was the territory of the infamous Armstrong Clan, which had the reputation of being the wildest of all the riding families on both sides of the Border.
While the Border was dominated by the Armstrongs on the Scottish side, the Forsters and the Grahams held sway on the English side.
There was a priory once at Canonbie, yet it was destroyed by the English in 1542. The stones were used in the building of Canonbie Bridge.
Gilnockie Tower is 16th century tower house, located at the hamlet of Hollows, 2.3km north of Canonbie, in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. The tower is situated on the west bank of the River Esk. It was originally known as Hollows Tower. Gilnockie Castle is a separate, but nearby site.
