Honeydown Farm Property Description
Honeydown Farm Bed and Breakfast is a luxurious farmhouse bed and breakfast accommodation near Crewkerne. Honeydown Farm Bed and Breakfast is a working farm on the Somerset Dorset border. Conveniently situated for a holiday, short break or business trip, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by quiet picturesque countryside, Honeydown Farm Bed and Breakfast is 1.5 miles from the Georgian market town of Crewkerne and thirty minutes from the Dorset coast.
Honeydown Farm Bed and Breakfast is a working dairy farm with 230 Holstein/Friesian cows, the farm is on a hill with panoramic views over Somerset (on a clear day you can see as far as Wales), across Dorset to the Blackmore Vale and almost to the coast and into Devon as well.
Nick and Catherine Bacon have been farming here for thirty five years and are now concentrating on milk production, rather than the previous combination of cows, beef and sheep which also included a small herd of pedigree Limousin Heifers. The milk goes to a local cheese factory and is made into Somerset Brie and Somerset Camembert, which is sold in most supermarkets.
As well as son Stuart, who is responsible for the management of the dairy herd, there is Sam a working Collie, Rusty a Collie x Huntaway, and Nelson the Labrador, who all think they have a vital part to play in the running of the farm. Richard, the new herdsman, has recently joined the team, there is a little concern because he says he is going to teach the cows Welsh, so will they still understand everyone else!
Guests are welcome to walk around the farm (wellington boots will come in useful), where you will see an assortment of wild flowers, well over 100 species have been seen in the past year, possibly ducks or moorhens on the pond and foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits in the fields or copse, plus a wide variety of birds including skylark, snipe, pheasant, partridge and buzzard, not to mention the wonderful views you will have from wherever you happen to be.
The farm also has seventeen free range hens who we hope will lay your breakfast eggs, an assortment of bantams that wander around the farm and garden and four ducks. We must also not forget Minty the sheep, she is now the only sheep on the farm, is three years old and is quite convinced she is a cow as she spends all her time with them!
